Garden Notes 2011

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Exciting news: tonight we picked and ate our first sweet peas. Never mind the solstice, now I KNOW summer is here!

Also up and growing now are the green beans, the second hill of zucchini, the second plantings of kohlrabi and lettuce, and so far the transplanted celariac starts that I got from the market are looking strong! Also doing well in the Earth Box are three cucumber plants - can't WAIT for fresh garden toppings on our salads!

Friday, June 10, 2011 - Garden Update

Much has been done since I last updated... asparagus bed prepped and planted, rhubarb transplanted from Aunt Sally's, garden enlarged and as of now, much of it is finally planted!  Yippee - it's coming together and is very exciting! We've been eating spinach and lettuce all week and in the last day or so the peas all started to flower. The onions went in late so they're hurting a bit, but I have my hopes up for a full recovery.

Here's a map of what I've got in:

If you want to be able to read the lettering, you should be able to double click to enlarge the image. It was supposed to be to scale, but it doesn't look to have worked - overall size is 22' by 26'. Off to the right in a bed that's 4' by 22' is the asparagus, and the rhubarb is off to the left, alongside the barn. Brown areas in the map are walkways, grey and light green areas are covered in thick black plastic, and the area above the green dotted line is enclosed in fencing in an attempt to keep out the rabbits and woodchucks. So far so good!

Just a couple of notes:
Kohlrabi #1 Variety is Winner (Fresh seed this year), planted early
Kohlrabi #2 Variety is Early Vienna (Leftover seed from last year), planted 6/10
Early Carrots Variet is Nelson
Red Salad Bowl and Fire & Ice Lettuce Blends are a second planting
I had planted the Elegance Greens Mix too, but the beetles ate it up so I already pulled it out.
I notice no difference in the spinach types, other than the Tyee is larger / faster growing than the Emu.
I still hope to get in some celariac if they still have starts at the market this week (to left of Green Beans).
Cucumbers (MarketMore Variety) are going in a Earth-Box up by the house due to lack of space in the garden!
I also made two raised beds this year over by the house / back porch. In there I have: eight basil plants of various varieties, chives, sage and oregano that overwintered, one new oregano, two rosemary, two thyme, a parsley and a cilantro plant.

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011 - Garden Seeds Arrived!!

The dorkiness continues - I was very excited to see the box from Johnny's in the mailbox today! Much of what I ordered will be shared with my father, so the order isn't really as large as it seems. Still, we'll need to prep more soil before we can fit all this in our plot! The asparagus should arrive mid-April, giving us just enough time to decide where it will go and get that dirt ready too!  Here's what I got:

Tonight I placed an order with Johnny's Seeds. I'm SO excited! I've always thought that those people who got all worked up about seeds and gardening were a little kooky, especially when it happens this time of year when the ground is still covered in white and frozen solid, but here I am, quickly becoming one of them.

  1. Oh I'm SO excited to see you ordered claytonia, mache and sylvetta arugula! I love that variety of arugula because it doesn't bolt and it's very cold hardy. You'll have to let me know how the mache and claytonia do for you. We can encourage each other in our kooky, seed loving ways :)
